"For unto you is born this day in the city of David
a Savior, which is Christ the Lord" (Luk.2:11)
Indeed, this is the best news we ever hear. The Nativity of the Lord Jesus Christ is exactly the day consecrated to hearing and celebrating this very good news, which is the best news we will ever hear in our entire life. And this news was couched by the Angel in these immortal words: “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11)
In a prologue to an English New Testament published in 1525 we read: “Evangelio is Greeke word,” (the old English spelling)“ and signifies good, marry, glad and joyful tidings, and it maketh a man’s heart glad, and it maketh him sing and dance and live for joy.”
The Nativity of the Lord means good tidings of great joy. Why is it good news? Because it is for all people: it is for everybody. When the Lord Jesus was born, it was the first time in human history that all of the answers for all mankind could be found in one person. All of the answers are in this Baby. That is an astonishing claim.
So, today is the day of good news, tidings of the great joy. Unto us was born this day a Savior, Who shall save us from the dismay that haunts us; Who shall save us from ourselves; Who shall save us from our conflicts and our weaknesses; Who shall bring us to glorious victorious achievement; Who shall make us strong like Himself.
Now, I greet you, the clergy and faithful in our God-beloved Diocese, and cordially ask you to experience the Lord Jesus Christ this day in your hearts and share the glad tidings with all fellow men everywhere, so all of us may be transformed by Him.
Christ is born! Glorify Him!
Chestito Rozhdestvo Christovo!
With love in the coming Christ Child,
+ Metropolitan JOSEPH
